Huggies vs. Hoops

What makes a huggie a huggie, when to choose a hoop, and how to wear both together.

Huggies and hoops are both circular earrings, but they sit very differently. A huggie hugs the lobe with little or no gap; a hoop hangs away from the lobe and moves as you do.

What you should know

The difference at a glance

  • Huggies — usually around 10–15 mm, often wider than a fine hoop, sit close to the lobe. Easy to wear all day and ideal for stacks.
  • Small hoops — around 15–20 mm, with a little space between the hoop and the lobe.
  • Medium and large hoops — 20 mm and up; they swing and frame the face.

When to choose a huggie

  • You want something you can wear every day without thinking about it.
  • You are building an ear stack or styling a second piercing.
  • You prefer a close, polished look.

When to choose a hoop

  • You want the earrings to be noticed from a distance.
  • You like movement.
  • You are dressing up—a medium or large hoop instantly makes an outfit look finished.

Wear them together

The easiest stack is a medium hoop in the first piercing and a huggie in the second. Keep the metals the same and let one piece—textured, stone-set or chunky—be the focus.

FAQ

Are huggies the same as small hoops?

Not quite. Huggies sit close around the lobe with little or no gap, while small hoops hang slightly away from it.

What size are huggie earrings?

Most huggies are around 10–15 mm. Some of ours are wider than they are tall, so check the height × width on the product page.

Can I wear huggies in my second piercing?

Yes. Small huggies suit second and upper-lobe piercings. MOBODUC earrings are designed for the lobe and upper lobe of healed piercings.

Which closure do huggies use?

Most of our huggies close with a hinged clicker or a hinged snap: open the hinge, pass the post through and press until it clicks shut.
