How to Build an Ear Stack

A simple formula for an ear stack that looks considered—sizes, spacing and how to mix pieces.

A good ear stack follows one rule: go from large to small as you move up the ear. The rest is about balance—mixing shapes and textures without crowding the lobe.

What you should know

The basic formula

  1. First piercing: your largest piece—a medium hoop or a statement stud.
  2. Second piercing: a huggie or small hoop around 10–13 mm.
  3. Upper lobe: a small stud or the smallest huggie.

Three stacks to copy

  • Everyday: small gold hoop + slim huggie + tiny stud.
  • Sparkle: pavé huggie + clear stud + plain huggie, so the stones stand out.
  • Bold: chunky hoop + plain huggie. Two pieces are enough when one is chunky.

Mixing metals and textures

Sticking to one metal looks polished; mixing gold and silver looks relaxed—repeat each metal at least twice so it feels intentional. Combine one textured or stone-set piece with plain ones so the stack doesn’t look busy.

Comfort

Keep heavier earrings in the first piercing, where the lobe is thickest, and choose Featherlight or Lightweight pieces higher up. MOBODUC earrings are designed for the lobe and upper lobe of healed piercings.

FAQ

How many earrings should be in a stack?

Two to four pieces per ear is a good range. With a chunky or statement hoop, two pieces are often enough.

Should both ears match?

They don’t have to. An asymmetric stack—more pieces on one side—looks modern, as long as both ears share at least one metal or shape.

Can I mix gold and silver?

Yes. Repeat each metal at least twice across the stack so the mix looks deliberate.

What size huggie goes in a second piercing?

A huggie around 10–13 mm usually suits a second piercing; it sits close without crowding the first earring.
