Jewelry Care

A little care goes a long way. Here are simple ways to clean, store and protect your favorite pieces. Check the material details on the product page first—different finishes need different care.

How should I care for my jewelry every day?

Put jewelry on after lotion, perfume and hair products have dried. Take it off before workouts, cleaning, gardening or anything that may scratch, knock or expose it to chemicals. After wearing, wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth and store each piece separately.

How do I clean gold-plated jewelry?

Use a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth. If needed, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth and dry right away. Avoid polishing cloths with compounds, abrasive cloths, chemical dips and soaking—they can wear down the plated finish. The same care applies to white-gold-plated, rhodium-plated and black-finish pieces.

How do I clean stainless steel jewelry?

Plain, unplated stainless steel can be cleaned with mild soap and lukewarm water, then rinsed briefly and dried thoroughly. Many of our stainless steel pieces are gold plated or set with stones; for those, follow the gentler care for plated or stone-set jewelry.

How should I care for sterling silver?

Plain 925 sterling silver can be cleaned with mild soap and lukewarm water and dried thoroughly; a silver polishing cloth removes light tarnish. Do not use a polishing cloth on gold-plated, rhodium-plated or oxidized silver, or on engraved and stone-set details—it can remove the finish.

How do I care for tungsten rings?

Tungsten is very hard and resists scratches, but it can chip or crack if it hits a hard surface, so take it off for heavy work and sports. Clean it with mild soap and warm water and dry it with a soft cloth. Tungsten cannot be resized.

Can I shower or swim with my jewelry?

We recommend taking jewelry off before showering, swimming, hot tubs and the beach. Salt water, chlorine and soap can dull plated finishes over time and are hard on pearls, mother-of-pearl, opal and stone settings.

How do I protect engraved and personalized jewelry?

Wipe engraved areas gently with a soft cloth. Avoid scrubbing and abrasive polishing, which can change the surface and soften the contrast of fine engraving. Store pieces separately to prevent scratches, and contact us before trying to polish faded lettering.

How do I care for pearls, mother-of-pearl and stone-set jewelry?

Avoid knocks, soaking, steam, ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals unless a jeweler confirms they are safe for that exact piece. Pearls, mother-of-pearl and opal are especially sensitive. Wipe gently with a soft cloth and store them separately.

How should I store necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings?

Store jewelry clean and completely dry in a soft pouch or lined box, away from humidity. Fasten chains and lay them flat or hang them to avoid tangles, and keep pieces apart so they don’t scratch each other.

How do I care for hinged hoops and earring posts?

Open and close hinges gently, without twisting. Don’t bend posts or force a closure that does not close easily. Check closures and stone settings before wearing, and contact us if anything feels loose.

How each closure works

What if my jewelry is scratched or changes color?

Wear, friction and exposure can gradually change some finishes. Before using abrasive cleaners or trying a repair, send us a clear photo and your order number and we’ll review the next steps. Manufacturing defects are covered for 1 year from delivery.
