Hoop Earring Size Guide

From huggies to statement hoops: picture the size next to a coin, then choose the width and weight that suit you.

We list every hoop as height × width in millimeters and inches, measured across the outside of the hoop. The easiest way to picture a size is to hold up a coin: a dime is about 18 mm and a quarter about 24 mm across.

What you should know

A quick size guide

As a rough guide:

  • About 10–15 mm — huggies that sit close around the lobe. Ideal for stacks and second piercings.
  • About 15–20 mm — small hoops, roughly dime-sized. An easy everyday size.
  • About 20–30 mm — medium hoops, around the size of a quarter. Noticeable but still easy to wear.
  • 30 mm and up — large and statement hoops that frame the face.

Our collections overlap a little—some huggies are wider than they are tall—so always check the exact size on the product page.

Width and thickness change the look

Two hoops with the same diameter can look very different. A thick or chunky 20 mm hoop reads bolder than a fine 25 mm hoop, and a wide huggie fills more of the lobe than a slim one. If you like a bold look without a big diameter, choose a chunky style in a small size.

Weight and comfort

We weigh one earring, not the pair, and give every earring a weight class from Featherlight to Heavyweight. For all-day wear, Featherlight and Lightweight are the easiest; larger and chunky hoops are often Medium or heavier.

Choosing a size for a stack

  • Wear the largest hoop in the first lobe piercing and go smaller as you move up the ear.
  • Huggies around 10–13 mm suit upper-lobe piercings.
  • Mix one textured or stone-set piece with plain hoops so the stack doesn’t look busy.

Closures on hoops

Most of our hoops use a hinged clicker or a hinged snap closure: open the hinge, pass the post through and press until it clicks. See Clasps & Closures for every closure type.

FAQ

Is hoop size the inside or outside diameter?

We measure across the outside of the hoop and list it as height × width, so the size you see is the full size of the earring.

What size hoops are best for everyday?

Small hoops around 12–20 mm are easy to wear every day. If you prefer something more visible, a 20–25 mm hoop is still comfortable for most people.

Are large hoops heavy?

Not always. Weight depends on the size, thickness and material. Check the weight class on the product page—Featherlight and Lightweight hoops are the easiest to wear for long periods.

What is the difference between a huggie and a small hoop?

A huggie sits close around the lobe with little or no gap, while a small hoop hangs slightly away from it. Huggies are usually 10–15 mm.

Which piercings are your earrings designed for?

MOBODUC earrings are designed for the lobe and upper lobe of healed piercings.
