Men’s Chain Guide

Choose the right length, width and chain style—from Franco and rope to Figaro and curb.

A men’s chain is defined by three things: length (where it sits), width (how bold it looks) and style (the shape of the links). Get those right and the chain will look intentional on its own or with a pendant.

What you should know

Choosing a length

  • 18″–20″ — sits at the base of the neck. A close, clean look.
  • 20″–22″ — the classic men’s length, at or just below the collarbone.
  • 22″–24″ — sits on the upper chest; a good length for pendants and for wearing over a T-shirt.
  • 24″ and longer — a longer chain look, usually worn with a pendant.

Chain width

Chain width is measured in millimeters across the links. Around 2–3 mm reads as a classic everyday chain—visible but understated. Wider chains look bolder and also weigh more. Our Franco and rope chains are around 2.4 mm wide; the exact width is listed on each product page.

Chain styles

  • Franco — tightly woven V-shaped links that look square from every angle. Sturdy and smooth, a popular everyday men’s chain.
  • Rope — strands twisted together like a rope, catching the light from every side.
  • Figaro — a pattern of short links followed by one longer link. Classic Italian design.
  • Curb — flat, interlocking links that lie flat against the skin.

Adding a pendant

A pendant needs a chain strong enough to carry it and long enough to let it hang freely—22″–24″ works for most pendants. Many of our men’s pendant necklaces, such as engraved bars, tags and discs, come on adjustable chains; the product page lists the length range.

FAQ

What length chain should a man wear?

20″–22″ is the classic length and sits at or just below the collarbone. Choose 22″–24″ for a pendant or to wear the chain over a shirt.

What is the most versatile men’s chain style?

A Franco or curb chain around 2–3 mm wide works with almost everything, on its own or with a pendant.

Can I wear two chains together?

Yes. Keep about 2″ between the lengths—for example 20″ and 22″—and pair a plain chain with a pendant or a chain of a different texture.

What metal are your men’s chains made of?

Our chains are made in 925 sterling silver, stainless steel or brass, and many are 14K gold plated. The product page lists the base metal and finish of each chain.
