Gold-Plated Jewelry Care

Simple habits that keep gold-plated pieces bright for longer—cleaning, storage and what to avoid.

Gold plating is a layer of gold over a base metal. With gentle care it keeps its color for a long time; harsh cleaning and chemicals wear it down faster. Many of our pieces are 14K gold plated—the product page lists the base metal and finish of each one.

What you should know

Everyday habits

  • Put jewelry on last—after lotion, perfume, hairspray and sunscreen have dried.
  • Take it off first—before showering, swimming, working out, cleaning or sleeping.
  • Wipe pieces with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat.

How to clean gold-plated jewelry

  1. Wipe gently with a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth.
  2. For more build-up, use a cloth that is only slightly damp, then dry the piece right away.
  3. Let it air-dry completely before storing it.

What to avoid

  • Polishing cloths with compounds, abrasive cloths and toothpaste.
  • Chemical dips, ultrasonic cleaners and soaking.
  • Chlorine, salt water and hot tubs.
  • Storing pieces together where they can rub against each other.

Storage

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from humidity and sunlight. Fasten chains before storing them so they don’t tangle.

Plating changes with wear

Over time, friction and exposure gradually wear plating, especially on rings and bracelets that touch surfaces all day. That is normal wear. If something looks wrong soon after you receive a piece, send us a photo and your order number.

FAQ

Can I shower with gold-plated jewelry?

We recommend taking it off. Soap, shampoo and hot water can dull the finish over time.

Does gold-plated jewelry tarnish?

The plating itself resists tarnish, but sweat, lotions and chemicals can dull it and wear it down over time. Gentle care keeps it looking bright longer.

Can I use a jewelry polishing cloth?

Only a plain, soft cloth. Polishing cloths with compounds are made to remove a thin layer of metal and can wear through plating.

What is the difference between gold-plated and gold-filled?

Gold-filled jewelry has a much thicker layer of gold bonded to the base metal. Gold-plated jewelry has a thinner layer, so it needs gentler care.
